What’s an Adjustment?

  • What’s an Adjustment?

The fundamental goal of chiropractic is to realign the spine and eliminate anything that is interfering with the body’s natural healing potential.

Chiropractic practitioners are distinguished from other types of healthcare providers by their use of spinal adjustments to align subluxations. The word “adjustment” refers to the precise force applied by chiropractors to the vertebrae that are misaligned have poor movement patterns or fail to function appropriately.

The goal of a chiropractic adjustment is to remove the subluxation, which results in more range of motion, less nerve irritability, decreased muscle spasm, decreased discomfort, and improved function. A chiropractic adjustment is a small, short, push to a vertebra in order to modify its alignment, movement, or both. Adjustments are frequently followed by an audible “crack” in the spinal joints. The “crack” or “pop” is a gas bubble popping. The sound of cracking may surprise individuals the first time, but the effect is typically soothing. Minor discomfort is occasionally felt, particularly if the surrounding muscles are in spasm or the individual tenses up during the chiropractic process. There are instances when there is no audible “cracking.”  This is frequently due to either excessive muscular stiffness or the person’s inability to relax during their adjustments. Some adjusting procedures are intended to manipulate the spine in such a way that no audible sound is produced. Chiropractic is much more than just a pain-relieving treatment.

Receiving chiropractic alignments should ultimately aim to return the body to its natural condition of optimal health. Chiropractors employ a number of natural healing approaches to do this, including adjustments, massage, trigger point treatment, diet, exercise rehabilitation, and counseling on lifestyle concerns that affect your health. The primary goal is to eliminate everything that interferes with the body’s natural healing potential. The basic goal of a chiropractor is to realign the spine. Some chiropractors adjust the extremities as well as employ other types of physiological therapy such as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, traction, neuromuscular re-education, and a range of manual therapies.

Some chiropractic clinics are evolving into full-service integrated wellness centers offering a wide range of treatments like trigger point injections, or knee injections. Wellness coaching is a new trend offered by chiropractic wellness facilities. Some programs provide wellness coaching in the wellness center, while others provide wellness coaching through phone, email, or online instant messenger to make it more convenient. Chiropractic wellness facilities may provide lectures on topics such as spinal alignment, improved posture, and ergonomics, as well as weight management, relaxation, smoking cessation, nutrition, and exercise regimens. Some organizations even provide pre-and-post-natal healthy infant programs.

The growing number of chiropractic facilities offering comprehensive wellness programs makes it easy and cheap for almost anybody to embrace a wellness lifestyle. Chiropractors understand that within each of us is intrinsic wisdom or healthy energy that, if we allow it, will manifest as perfect health and well-being. As a result, the primary goal of chiropractic care is to remove any physiological impediments to the optimal expression of the body’s intrinsic knowledge. Improved health is the natural result of reducing these interferences. What person wouldn’t want that?
